Independent certification validates STT GDC's commitment to delivering sustainable, energy- and water-efficient digital infrastructure in Japan

TOKYO, Japan, 21 August 2026 — ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (Japan) today announced that STT Tokyo 1, its data centre in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture, has achieved Gold certification under the LEED® green building rating system. The certification provides independent validation of the facility's strong performance in areas including energy efficiency, water management and environmental stewardship, reflecting STT GDC's commitment to delivering sustainable and operationally efficient digital infrastructure in Japan. STT Tokyo 1 is also designed to achieve an annualised Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.25, reinforcing STT GDC's commitment to delivering sustainable and operationally efficient digital infrastructure in Japan.

Independent recognition of STT Tokyo 1's sustainability performance
LEED Gold certification demonstrates STT Tokyo 1's strong performance across key sustainability measures, including energy efficiency, responsible water stewardship and reduced environmental impact. The certification provides customers and stakeholders with independent assurance of the facility's environmental credentials while supporting STT GDC's broader commitment to developing digital infrastructure responsibly and efficiently.

The certification recognised particularly strong performance across four areas:

  • Sustainable Sites: Rainwater management measures, mitigation of the urban heat island effect and the reduction of light pollution (light spilling from the facility that affects the surrounding night-time environment) help minimise environmental impact on the site and surrounding community.

  • Water Efficiency: Closed-loop cooling is designed to ensure no ongoing water consumption during normal operations . Indoor and outdoor water-saving measures, together with comprehensive monitoring and management systems, support the responsible use of water resources while reducing unnecessary consumption.

  • Energy and Atmosphere: Optimisation of building energy performance and enhanced commissioning processes improve operational efficiency, reduce energy consumption and support lower operational emissions.

  • Innovation: Construction waste management practices, energy-efficient lighting systems and external noise mitigation measures contributed to the facility’s strong environmental performance.

“Achieving LEED Gold certification for STT Tokyo 1 is an important milestone for STT GDC in Japan and reflects our commitment to developing digital infrastructure responsibly,” said Kiyoshi Maeda, Chief Executive Officer – Japan, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres. “As demand for cloud, AI and digital services continues to grow, customers increasingly expect infrastructure that combines operational resilience and efficiency with strong sustainability performance. This certification provides independent validation of our efforts in these areas and reinforces our commitment to supporting Japan's digital future with high-quality, sustainable data centre infrastructure.”

About LEED® certification
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a rating system developed and operated by the U.S. non-profit organisation USGBC® (U.S. Green Building Council®), with certification assessments conducted by GBCI® (Green Business Certification Inc.™). It is the most widely adopted certification system in the world for evaluating environmentally responsible buildings and urban environments. Within the programme, the Building Design and Construction (BD+C) category applies to new construction and major renovation projects. Dedicated assessment criteria are also provided for data centres to reflect their unique operational requirements, including continuous cooling, high power density and extensive mechanical and electrical systems.

About STT Tokyo 1
Located within Goodman Business Park in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture, STT Tokyo 1 is STT GDC’s first data centre in Japan. It is the first of two buildings planned for the campus, with STT Tokyo 2 scheduled to commence operations in late 2027. STT Tokyo 1 will deliver up to 32MW of IT capacity when fully operational, while the completed campus is expected to provide approximately 70MW of IT capacity and 60,000 square metres of gross floor area.

In mid-2024, STT Tokyo 1 became one of the first data centres to achieve certification under the revised TIA-942-C standard, demonstrating high levels of resilience, availability and physical security. The facility has also obtained certifications including ISO 22301, ISO 27001 and ISO/IEC 20000, and complies with the Japan Data Centre Council (JDCC) guidelines.

Since commencing operations, the facility has maintained carbon-neutral operations for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions while pursuing renewable energy procurement and continuously optimising energy efficiency through both design and operational improvements. STT Tokyo 1 is designed to achieve an annualised PUE of less than 1.25. A behind-the-metre solar photovoltaic system also supports selected site operations, including exterior lighting, electric vehicle charging stations and water pumps.
